Dwight D. Eisenhower, the supreme Allied commander who directed the D-Day invasion, won the presidency in 1952 on immense postwar popularity.

He ended the Korean War, presided over 1950s prosperity, and launched the Interstate Highway System, the largest public-works project in American history. He sent troops to enforce school desegregation in Little Rock and created NASA after the Soviet Sputnik launch. Warning in his farewell of a growing 'military-industrial complex,' he steered a steady, centrist course through the tense early Cold War.
