Benjamin Harrison, grandson of President William Henry Harrison, won the presidency in 1888 despite losing the popular vote to Grover Cleveland.
His single term was legislatively busy: he signed the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, the first federal law against monopolies, and the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, while the McKinley Tariff raised duties sharply. Six new western states entered the Union under him. Rising federal spending and economic unease helped Cleveland defeat him in their 1892 rematch.
