Grover Cleveland returned to the White House in 1893, the only president to win non-consecutive terms, defeating Benjamin Harrison in a rematch.

His second term was immediately overwhelmed by the Panic of 1893, a severe depression. His conservative response—repealing the Sherman Silver Purchase Act and defending the gold standard—divided his party. He sent federal troops to break the 1894 Pullman railroad strike, further alienating labor and the Democratic base, which turned toward William Jennings Bryan and free silver.
