Woodrow Wilson, a former Princeton president and New Jersey governor, won the presidency in 1912 and enacted a sweeping progressive agenda.

He created the Federal Reserve System, established the Federal Trade Commission, and lowered tariffs. Re-elected in 1916 on a promise of peace, he led the United States into World War I in 1917 and framed the war as a fight to make the world 'safe for democracy.' His Fourteen Points shaped the peace, and he championed the League of Nations—but the Senate rejected it, and a stroke left him incapacitated in his final year.
