Warren G. Harding

Warren G. Harding, an Ohio newspaper publisher and senator, won a landslide in 1920 promising a 'return to normalcy' after the upheavals of war and Wilson's idealism.

He cut taxes, raised tariffs and hosted a major naval-disarmament conference. But his administration became a byword for corruption, most notoriously the Teapot Dome scandal, in which his interior secretary secretly leased federal oil reserves for bribes. Harding died suddenly of a heart attack in 1923, before the scandals fully broke, leaving a tarnished legacy.
