Calvin Coolidge

Calvin Coolidge, the reserved Massachusetts governor who became famous for calmly breaking the 1919 Boston police strike, succeeded to the presidency on Harding's death in 1923 and restored public trust in the office.

Nicknamed 'Silent Cal,' he embodied small-government frugality, cutting taxes and federal spending while the economy boomed through the Roaring Twenties. He signed the 1924 act granting citizenship to all Native Americans. Popular and easily re-elected in 1924, he chose not to run again in 1928, months before the prosperity gave way to the Great Depression.
