Gerald Ford

Gerald Ford is the only person to serve as president without being elected president or vice president. Appointed vice president after Spiro Agnew resigned, he became president when Nixon resigned in 1974.

He sought to heal a divided nation after Watergate, but his pardon of Nixon a month into his term proved deeply controversial and likely cost him the 1976 election. He wrestled with high inflation and recession and oversaw the final withdrawal from Vietnam. His steady, unassuming character restored a measure of trust to the office.
