Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer and Georgia governor, won the presidency in 1976 as a Washington outsider promising honesty after Watergate.

His signature triumph was the Camp David Accords, a historic peace between Egypt and Israel that he personally brokered. He created the Departments of Energy and Education and championed human rights abroad. But high inflation, an energy crisis, and above all the Iran hostage crisis—444 days that dominated his final year—doomed his re-election. He went on to a celebrated humanitarian career and lived to 100.
