George H. W. Bush brought perhaps the deepest résumé of any modern president—congressman, U.N. ambassador, CIA director, and Reagan's vice president—to the office he won in 1988.

He presided over the peaceful end of the Cold War as the Soviet Union collapsed and assembled a broad international coalition to expel Iraq from Kuwait in the 1991 Gulf War. But a recession and his reversal of a 'no new taxes' pledge eroded his support at home, and he lost re-election in 1992 to Bill Clinton.
