Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton, a young Arkansas governor, won the presidency in 1992 and presided over the longest peacetime economic expansion in American history to that point.

He balanced the federal budget, produced surpluses, signed welfare-reform and free-trade legislation, and brokered peace efforts in the Balkans and Northern Ireland. His second term was shadowed by a scandal that led the House to impeach him in 1998; the Senate acquitted him and he left office with high approval as the 1990s boom crested.
