Barack Obama, elected in 2008, was the first African American president and took office amid the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

He signed a large stimulus to arrest the downturn, rescued the auto industry, and enacted the Affordable Care Act, the most significant expansion of health coverage in decades. He oversaw the operation that killed Osama bin Laden, reached the Paris climate accord and a nuclear deal with Iran, and reopened relations with Cuba. His two terms reshaped health care, financial regulation and the Democratic coalition.
